It was 60 years ago when the young, vibrant and hopeful Democratic Party, unable to secure the Hilo Armory for its pre-election rally, chose to move the celebration to the Mooheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo.
It was 60 years ago when the young, vibrant and hopeful Democratic Party, unable to secure the Hilo Armory for its pre-election rally, chose to move the celebration to the Mooheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo.
The following day, the Democratic Party achieved its historic statewide “revolution.”
This Monday, on the eve of Election Day, the Hawaii County Democratic Party will once again light up the bandstand as members host the traditional Grand Rally to celebrate the party and its candidates.
Everyone is invited.
Special guests will be Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, all of whom will speak in support of the party’s gubernatorial slate, state Sen. David Ige and Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui.
Traditional sign-waving along Kamehameha Avenue will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by music by state Sen. Russell Ruderman and his band, El Jarican Express, at 4 p.m. Sign-wavers and other members of the public will be “summoned” to the bandstand by Hui Okinawa Kobudo Taiko drummers at 5 p.m. Hear final speeches from the candidates, all of whom have worked tirelessly for months.
